The Prowess Restoration
S/V - "Prowess" - 47' Eldridge-McInnis Cutter
Prowess was first designed in 1923 as the popular Eastern Class Schooner #138. She was built by the Stockwell yard in Detroit in 1948 or 1949 and was converted to a cutter rig during construction. Prowess' first name was Nyad, then Sailbad the Sinner and ultimately Bonnehomme Richard hailing from Cleveland, Ohio.
Portland Yacht Service first restored Prowess in the mid-1980's. This work was very extensive, including a completely new interior, deck and much of the structural members. Twenty years later she underwent a major refit that has been spread out over three years. This refit has included a re-power, systems upgrade, completely wooding the hull and the bottom. The varnish has also been completely stripped and restored.
Next winter we will be re-working the interior galley, head and adding considerable storage lockers in the main salon and v berth. We have also restored her to the original cutter rig after being sailed primarily as a sloop. She will be fitted out with traditional panel cut sails; three strand rope and new wooden blocks.
